Class prep · TJ Advanced Astronomy: Solar System

Understand the Solar System, and the math behind it.

Short lessons that start from zero, then original problems written to match the depth of the TJ course, each with a full worked solution. Built by Neil Kothari, a TJ alumnus.

$395 covers the full school year. The first lesson is free.

From a boat, a sailor measures the elevation of a lighthouse lamp as 2.3∘2.3^\circ (two point three degrees, in decimal form). The lamp is 74 m74\ \mathrm{m} above the level of her eye. How far is the boat from the foot of the lighthouse, to two significant figures? Take the sea as flat.

Lesson 1.1: Right Triangles, Trigonometry and Parallax

How a right triangle, a baseline and one measured angle give you a height, a width or the distance to a star.

This lesson starts from zero. No astronomy background is needed.

Problem 2

  • Core
  • True or false
  • No calculator
  • 2 pts

A parallax measurement of a star's direction uses a baseline bb and a star at distance dd, and the parallax angle is p≈b/dp\approx b/d for the tiny angles involved. A first observation uses baseline bb on a star at distance dd. A second observation uses a baseline 33 times as long on a different star that is 1.51.5 times as far away. True or False: the second parallax angle is 4.54.5 times as large as the first. Justify your answer.

Is the statement true or false?

Problem 3

  • Core
  • Multiple choice
  • Calculator
  • 4 pts

A surveyor stands 85 m85\ \mathrm{m} from the foot of a radio mast on level ground. Her instrument measures angles from straight overhead (the zenith angle), and it gives 72.0∘72.0^\circ for the top of the mast. Ignore the height of the instrument above the ground. How tall is the mast, to the nearest 0.1 m0.1\ \mathrm{m}?

How it works

Class prep that works alongside class

For students currently taking Advanced Astronomy: Solar System. It works alongside class, not in place of it. Students who already know the material get faster and more careful. Students who feel behind rebuild a topic with the lesson before they try the problems.

  • Every problem is original and written to match the depth of the TJ course: true or false, multiple choice, multi-part and free response.
  • Each one is marked core, test level or beyond, and calculator or no calculator.
  • Solutions show every step and end with the mistake that most often costs points.
  • Diagrams wherever a picture makes the idea clear.

Who built it

Neil Kothari

TJHSST alumnus · Co-founder, EduAvenues · 10+ years in TJ preparation

Neil sat in these classrooms himself and has spent more than a decade working with TJ students and their families. He built this course so students can practice the reasoning and the calculations together. Every problem is written for the course and every answer is checked before it goes in.
