What the check compares

Medical schools read the whole application, but most start with the same few pieces.

GPA and MCAT
Compared with AAMC figures for the 2025 entering class: a mean GPA of 3.81 and a mean MCAT of 512.1 for admitted students.
Clinical experience
Time with patients, which shows you understand what the work involves.
Shadowing
Time observing physicians, ideally in more than one specialty.
Research
Helpful and expected at research-heavy schools, optional at many others.
Community service
Sustained work with people in need outside a clinical setting.

Hours guidance is EduAvenues advice, not an official requirement. Source for GPA and MCAT figures: AAMC, U.S. medical schools enroll record number of students in 2025 (Dec. 9, 2025).

Common Questions

What GPA and MCAT do medical schools look for?

Each school is different, but the AAMC reports that students who entered medical school in 2025 averaged a 3.81 GPA and a 512.1 MCAT, against 3.67 and 506.3 for all applicants. The check compares your ranges with those figures.

How many clinical, shadowing and service hours do I need?

There is no official number. The check uses EduAvenues guidance for where most applications show real depth and labels it as guidance, not data. Steady commitment over time matters more than a total.

When should I apply to medical school?

AMCAS usually opens in early May and accepts submissions from late May, and medical school starts in August of the following year. Submitting in June, with the MCAT score already back, is the strongest position. Many applicants now take one or more gap years first.

I am in high school. Is this useful yet?

Yes. Choose high school and the check skips the college questions, shows when you would likely apply and, in the full report, covers choosing a college, BS/MD programs and experiences to start now.
