How ACT scores the enhanced ACT
- Composite
- The average of your English, Math and Reading scores, rounded to the nearest whole number. The range is 1 to 36.
- Rounding
- Fractions less than one-half round down. Fractions of one-half or more round up. With three scores the average always ends in .00, .33 or .67, so .33 rounds down and .67 rounds up.
- Section scores
- English, Math, Reading and Science are each scored from 1 to 36.
- Science
- Optional. It is reported on its own and does not count toward the Composite.
- STEM score
- Reported for students who take Science. ACT describes it as the rounded average of the Math and Science scores; the calculator rounds it the same way as the Composite.
- Writing
- Optional, scored from 2 to 12 and reported separately. It is not part of the Composite.
The older ACT Composite averaged four sections, including Science. ACT says the new three-section Composite can be used interchangeably with the old one.

Common Questions
Does Science count toward the ACT Composite?
Not on the enhanced ACT. The Composite is the average of English, Math and Reading. Science is optional and is reported as its own score, along with a STEM score for students who take it.
How does ACT round the Composite?
ACT averages the section scores and rounds to the nearest whole number. Fractions less than one-half round down, and fractions of one-half or more round up.
Is the Writing score part of the Composite?
No. Writing is optional and scored from 2 to 12. It is reported separately and does not change the Composite.
Can colleges compare my Composite with older ACT scores?
ACT says the three-section Composite can be used interchangeably with the older four-section Composite, so colleges can read them on the same 1 to 36 scale.
