The official concordance table

ACT and College Board released these tables together in 2018. They are the only official SAT and ACT concordance, and neither organization updates them every year.

The 2018 tables and the enhanced ACT

The 2018 study compared the paper SAT with the ACT Composite of that time, which averaged four sections including Science. Since then the SAT has moved to a digital format, and the enhanced ACT Composite averages only English, Math and Reading. Science is now optional.

ACT has addressed this directly. Its 2025 guidance says the new three-section Composite can be used interchangeably with the older Composite, and that “the current ACT-SAT concordance can continue to be used.” ACT also says formal work on updating the concordance has not begun, and that an update would need data from students who took both the enhanced ACT and the digital SAT.

So these are the official numbers, used the way ACT recommends. Treat a converted score as an estimate of a comparable score, not a promise.

How to read the result

SAT to ACT
Table A1 gives one ACT Composite for every SAT total from 590 to 1600, in 10-point steps.
ACT to SAT
Table A2 gives a single SAT score to use when you need one number, and the range of SAT totals that concord to that ACT Composite.
Section scores
The 2018 release also has tables for Math and for SAT Reading and Writing against ACT English plus Reading. This tool covers total and Composite scores only.
What it is not
A concordance compares scores. It does not predict what a student would score on the other test.

Common Questions

Is a converted score the same as taking the other test?

No. ACT and College Board say a concorded score is not a perfect prediction of how a student would do on the other test. The tables show comparable scores, not equal ones.

Do the tables work with the new, shorter ACT?

ACT says yes. Its 2025 guidance says the enhanced ACT Composite (English, Math and Reading) can be used interchangeably with the older four-section Composite, and that the current ACT-SAT concordance can continue to be used. The tables themselves were built in 2018, before both the digital SAT and the enhanced ACT.

Why does ACT to SAT give a range?

Several SAT totals concord to the same ACT Composite, because the SAT scale has more steps. Table A2 lists that range and a single SAT score to use when one number is needed.

My SAT score is below 590. What does it convert to?

The official table stops at an SAT total of 590 (ACT 9). There is no official concordance below that, so this tool does not show one.

Should I take the SAT or the ACT?

Most students do best on the test whose format suits them. A practical way to decide is to take a full-length practice test of each and compare the results with this converter.
